This darling small white kitchen belongs to design enthusiast and blogger Dorothee LaFontaine of L’Appartement Living blog. A small space transformed into one with big style. Dorothee lives in Basque country in France. She remodeled the kitchen in her small apartment to work for her family and for the space.
White floors to make the kitchen feel larger, open upper shelves because of the challenge of slanted ceilings made upper cabinets more difficult, a kitchen island peninsula for dining because they sit down for dinner every night and then all of the touches. Plants, pink appliances (a pale pink blender and a mixer), copper tone pendant lights, subway tiles, brass cabinet hardware (knobs are discreet but add gleam) and more. The vintage kilim rug adds playful color to the space.

As part of the Australian Federal Government’s Building Education Revolution, dKO Architecture was commissioned to design the student library and associated facilities at St Joseph’s Primary School in Collingwood, Melbourne. Here is the official project description we received: “Today’s libraries are repositories and access points for vast quantities of print, audio and visual materials in numerous formats. With projects of this nature the opportunity for architects is to create spaces that meet the challenges brought about by ever-changing technology as well as providing for a dynamic and diverse age group within the primary school learning spectrum. Quality of light and an intelligent use of space are paramount. Careful consideration should also be given to managing internal traffic areas and noise control. dKO Architecture’s design has delivered an environment which encourages vibrant student interaction while accommodating quiet study areas, as well as considered and abundant storage for the vast amount of resources required in the modern day library.” Think this is the sort of design that will boost the kids’ reading appetite?

One look at these photos is enough to make anyone remember that creativity comes in many shapes. These impressive abandoned Victorian homes were all built with the help of LEGO bricks. The original idea belongs to Mike Doyle, who not to long ago finished his third collapsing home in this amazing series. According to Laughing Squid, the projects made so far are called Victorian on Mud Heap, achieved with the help of about 110k-130k pieces (first photo), Three Story Victorian with Tree, made of 50k-60k LEGO pieces (second photo) and TwoStory with Basement (third picture of this post). And in case you were wondering, each house took from 450 to 600 hours to build. But the creative mind behinds them explains: “To my eyes, patterns of decay find a more pleasing path than an untouched object. A roof collapsed by the weight of snow, side shingles ripped by the force of winds, substructures rotting, insects and weather gnawing the exposed surfaces. I can picture those windy days where a shingle flies off. Or the sudden creaking, cracking and burst of tinder giving way under snow’s heavy hand“. We find these decaying Victorian homes absolutely spectacular and are looking forward to seeing your reactions.

KIT pavilion was designed by Japanese Architects Atelier K and is located in Kyoto, Japan. The building was especially designed as an office and meeting space for the Kyoto Institute of Technology. A giant cantilevered roof creates a dramatic visual effect and differentiates the project from its surrounding buildings. According to the architects, the multi-functional design “draws from and integrates the adjacent landscaping into the conditions of the interior. To the south, an ‘active yard’ consisting of a curvilinear ramp becomes the approach path to the entrance, while a ‘static yard’ finished with a carpet of white sand is tucked into the layout with three rooms arranged around it. Clearly read from the exterior as a folded surface, the roof and wall form cuts away sections of its elevation to enable natural daylight to enter from the west.” The interior design is clean and tasteful, with lovely modern arrangements, creating an environment that is highly fit for professional discussions. Vila Castela was designed by Anastasia Architects and is an original looking modern home located in Nova Lima, Brazil. The cantilevered volumes are a result of the site characteristics: “We have chosen this concept not only for aesthetic reasons, but above all to reduce the interference of the building mass in the topography, keeping the site as natural as possible. As we placed the ground level of the residence 7 meters below the street , we were able to preserve the pedestrian view of the forest, at the same time that keeping the privacy of the owners, because the main apertures and the glass walls are oriented to the east, on the opposite side of the street. The urban impact of the residence is minimized, in benefit of the beautiful view of the woods“. According to the architects, the total constructed area is 650 sq meters and the residence has three floors: the basement with sauna, Jacuzzi, and an wine cellar, the ground floor (living area and the kitchen and external terrace) and the first floor, where the bedrooms are located. We have to know: do you find the geometry of this residence appealing?

Once in a while, an item is so simple and provocative, that it immediately stands out in the crowd. This time, we are talking about a shelving unit that is not only versatile, but also simple and fresh. The fun, colorful and minimalist piece of furniture that drew our attention is the Serpent Modular Shelving System by Bashko Trybek. Its effective design leaves little room for clutter – it encourages you to keep it as tidy as possible in order to enhance the modern design. The fun part is that you can interact with the shelving system, creating your own dimensions and displays. This makes it easier for you to personalize the living or working space while displaying a colorful collection of adjustable wires. Easy to recycle, the Serpent Modular Shelving System displays a CMYK color scheme that will make it easy to fit in with a modern interior design.

For today we would like to present an intriguing residence, initially built in 1932 for the renowned American muralist Ezra Winter. The impressive 6,600 square foot house was designed by Winterhouse Studio and is located in a privileged landscape in Northwestern Connecticut. The natural environment within which this home is integrated features landscaped gardens, open land, hiking trails, streams and a beautiful natural waterfall. The house consists of four bedrooms, three and a half bathrooms, a large painted studio with 30’ ceilings and 24’ high windows, contemporary kitchen, garage and barn. The generous living room (or family room) can be recognized by the original stone fireplace and floor to ceiling bookshelves. The dining room looks royal and inviting. Occupying one of the most amazing reinvented buildings in Denver, Colorado, the Flour Mill Lofts display a collection of residential spaces that maintain the charm of the old building and enhance it with the power of contemporary interior design. The Pride of the Rockies Flour Mill building was transformed into an exquisite residential building and later a newer building containing 30 luxury lofts was built next to the old one. The old flour mill built in 1920 was abandoned until 1998, when it was restored and converted into 17 lofts. One of these lofts is for sale here for $973,000 and you can enjoy its exquisite interiors in the photos below. Situated in the building between downtown Denver and the Platte River Parkway, this Flour Mill Loft features 2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms, entertaining, living and dining spaces and a terrace, spread over a total surface of 2,198 square feet. How would you like to call this loft home?

Tube House2 was designed by Japanese practice Hideki Iwahori in order to serve as a getaway for a married couple who lives in the heart of Tokyo. The urban racket called for a home that is secluded, peaceful and comfortable. The architecture of the project is based on an assembly of partitions resembling a series of giant tubes. A simple rectangular shape that opens up towards its environment through floor to ceiling windows was the perfect solution. According to the architects, “the living space maintains a level of openness that is both efficient and clear. a ceiling arrangement of synthetic wooden beams gains a dominant presence in the space, with roof lights between gaps illuminating the space below. featuring a thermal storage layer in the foundation, the micro-climate is passively preserved by the sun, enabling the inhabitants to freely live in open air without compromising on room temperature“. How would you comment on this home’s design, if you were to take the modern Japanese architecture trends into consideration ?

Surrounded by an exceptional landscape, Villa 4.0 seems to be the modern equivalent of a dream home. Each and every detail constructs an amazing single family residence that was transformed from a 1967 bungalow that was renovated once before, in 1972. Re-designed by Amsterdam-based studio Dick van Gameren Architecten, the Netherlands villa expresses a transitional charm from a 1967 bungalow architecture to a contemporary villa inhabited by a young family. Sustainability is the word that best characterizes the design and daily use of the house. The architects kept most of the old building intact and constructed a low maintenance residence: “Key points of departure were maximum reuse of built elements and materials already on site and the use of sturdy and proven techniques to achieve the lowest possible energy consumption.” Both the renovated and the new walls were insulated and the old wood window frames have been replaced with new aluminum – framed insulated glass walls. Skylights and retractable windows further illuminate the interiors and compose a fascinating atmosphere once accompanied by the vividly colored furniture. Exceptional dream home, isn’t it?

Old vintage items can become part of new and modern furniture in the hands of the right artists. These interesting drawer towers were created by the English design duo of James Plumb. By bringing new life to items that would have probably become just part of a pile of trash, the designers created a way of looking at old objects through the lens of modern design. Old suitcases were given another chance to surprise and delight by pairing them up with simple, metal frameworks that were customized to fit in with the different sized suitcases. Because of the charming differences in each suitcase, the design was altered according to the dimensions and shapes of the vintage elements. Available in different sizes and widths, the Suitcase Drawers can adorn your interiors with the revived charm and elegance of two separate but adjoined elements – an old selection of travel helpers and a modern definition of storage spaces.

Located in the Fruvik area just outside Stockholm, Sweden, this home features a clean, modern display of furniture and furnishings. The 1,845 square meter open floor plan is divided into three large, bright bedrooms, two living rooms, kitchen and dining area, all overlooking the water. A terrace allows the inhabitants to enjoy fresh air and views of the waterfront and two staircases allow easy access to the beach below. Bright walls and dark-stained floors on the first level compose an elegant space where a contemporary dining space can accommodate 10-12 people. The living room features a beautiful and functional cast iron stove that adds character to the room, creating a cozy atmosphere especially during the cold season. A well-lit master bedroom with walk-in-closet and en suite pamper the owners, while the bathroom has comfortable underfloor heating. When it comes to creating an Italian fashion store based on a company’s overall communication strategy, things can get tricky. However, Alberto Apostoli Studio came up with a design that is both appealing and brand oriented. Here is the official description of the Eliseo store from the architects: “The concept underlying this project is based on a combination of creativity and rationality and evolves through a refined use of form, light and colour. Rationality is implicit in the use of squared shapes executed in glass and metal; creativity is mainly to be seen in three elliptic elements rising from the floor to model the false ceilings, thus contributing to separate the retail space into three distinct areas: menswear, ladies’ wear and young fashion. Important elements of emotional communication with the clientele are, for example, the back‐lit glass display cabinets, the RGB lighting of the false ceilings and the “honeycomb” display units in glass and metal. The LEDs, whose vertical and horizontal light is used by Apostoli as a proper surface covering, run all along the main aisles of the store and its furnishings, transforming the latter into sources of indirect light.

Transforming two one bedroom duplex suits into one two bedroom duplex was not an easy job for architects from Slade Architecture. Located in New York City, the Gramercy Duplex displays a contemporary floor plan that includes a living space on the lower level with a kitchen and powder room on one side and a master bedroom suite on the other. Many storage spaces across the duplex allow the inhabitants to hide any clutter, while high-tech systems like the remotely activated drop down LCD TV in the living room are prepared to offer quality entertainment. The kitchen features a movable island that allows the owner to reconfigure the space while the “walnut base cabinetry, Richlite countertops (recycled paper) and satin etched glass upper cabinets” adorn the white space. A staircase extending from the kitchen cabinets connects the two levels. On the same floor as the living room, the master bedroom contains the sleeping functions and some cleverly designed additions: “The vanity floats in the middle of the space and doubles as the headboard and side tables for the bed. The toilet and bath/shower are built into the back wall of the space.” The upstairs is occupied by the daughter’s bedroom and a guest room, making this residence perfect for the inhabitant’s modern lifestyle.

The Bliss House comes from Bliss Spaces and is located in North London. The unique project we would like to present today consists of two private homes, each having a surface of about 4,000 sq feet, three levels, spacious yards and backyard studios. With a striking architecture, it is hard to believe the Bliss House was constructed in just 6 days! How was this possible? The materials were prefabricated beforehand and the actual “assembling” required just six men on the job. According to Inhabitat, efficient construction methods and the overall design took advantage of the latest energy efficient ideas in matters of appliances and lighting. Each of the two homes features radiant floor heating, a heat recovery system, LED lighting, double glazed windows and wood burning stoves in the living room. And to top it all, their appearance is truly delightful.

Pedra Silva Architects completed the newest offices for the German institute Fraunhofer. Their team was selected, through an open competition, to design the new Porto headquarters, located at the Technology University Campus: “Parque de Ciência e Tecnologia da Universidade do Porto (UPTEC)”. Here is the project description we were sent by the developers: “Our design took into account Fraunhofer’s innovative philosophy trough a message that is simple, positive and dynamic. Innovative workplace layout and organizational elements from Frauhnofer Office Innovation Center in Stuttgart (Germany) were also an important input to the project, adding another layer to our concept. The new research facilities occupy two floors in a new UPTEC building in a total of 1.660sqm. Circulation is the project’s backbone; all spaces appear along a distribution route located next to the glass façade.

This main axis allows access to all different spaces. These spaces, with different functions and sizes, are generated and consolidated through a bold gesture: a waving plane that goes through the open floors, creating different spaces and ambiances. The spatial and visual dynamics are generated by a free plane that travels through the space and by colour, that reinforces the perception of different volumes. The waving surface acts, depending on the context, as ceiling, wall or floor of offices and meeting rooms, guaranteeing visual continuity, movement and flow. Another important asset to the project is the introduction of several small social and meeting spaces, named silent rooms, which allow for personal retreat, as well as informal meetings or resting. These spaces are intended to generate a highly creative environment promoting comfort and well being among the researchers”.

Located in Fayetteville, Arkansas, in the city’s historic district, the Allen Residence features 1,358 square feet plus an additional 2,596 square feet under roof area including a two car carport, a workshop, a screen porch and front entry porch. The two-bedroom residence is home to Professor and Director of Graduate Studies for Fulbright College of Arts & Science, who used the home’s design and building process as an example in her Environmental Communications course. Using passive solar energy and having been built with environmentally friendly materials, the Alden Residence is an example of sustainable modern living. Two simple opposing slope shed roofs with a breezeway in between cover the interior spaces, while the three foot overhangs protect the rooms from too much sun. Designed by Skiles Architect , the house features fiber cement board, galvalume and cedar slates as main building materials and other sustainable elements:” The project earned an Energy Star 5+ certification. Other features include geothermal heat pump with radiant concrete floors, SIP roof panels and a generous screen porch to block the west sun. The cathedral ceilings, with exposed laminated beams and pine decking continue to the exterior porches to blur the line between inside and outside. The narrow footprint allows for natural light to permeate and enliven the interior.”

Eaton Residence was designed by E. Cobb Architects and is an original looking cantilevered home located in Magnolia Park, Seattle, Washington. The exterior design of this residence is truly imposing and eye-catching. Composed of two intersected volumes, the residence seems to float above the generous pool in the courtyard and watch over it at the same time. From the street, the house has a relatively unfriendly look and seems to resemble a closed fortress. But once the entrance gate is passed, the visitor is greeted by a green yard, large windows and an overall inviting environment. The interior design is highly modern. A large, open plan living room with floor to ceiling windows and minimalist furniture sets the tone for the entire home. No matter what room you are in, the ocean views are maximized and the indoor/outdoor boundaries fade away. How would you feel about living in this type of home? Do you find it inviting or too sober?

The Graticule House was designed by studio David Jameson Architect and is a two-story single-family residence located near the estuary of a river in Great Falls, Virginia, USA. Here is a short project description from the architects: “Situated on a hillside site, the Graticule House is conceived to be a trace, or reference datum, allowing a reading of the relationship between the building and nature. Fundamental to the conception of the house is the notion of cadence, where repetitious vertical and horizontal markers of the building’s tectonics are juxtaposed with the particularity of the forest and ground plane. Light and space are modulated by meshing ribbons of glass and wall planes that form a tessellation of solid and void.” The interior design of the Graticule House is tasteful and minimalist, with generous windows that ensure a perfect connection to the outdoors.
