Hillside Sliding House Overlooking the Ocean

Designed by MacKay-Lyons Sweetapple Architects, the Sliding House received its name from the shape displayed on a sloping terrain. Situated on an agrarian hillside, the house seems to slide towards the nearby lake. Halifax-based architecture studio MacKay-Lyons Sweetapple Architects were the ones that made this all possible. They designed a modern interior space, where private rooms and public entertainment facilities are separated by the geometry of the building: “The volume of the house pinwheels symmetrically in section about the horizontal axis of the ribbon window, creating an upper and a lower bedroom.” Spreading over 1,700 square feet, the vacation retreat in Upper Kingsburg, Canada “ sets up a tension between a ‘plumb’ interior and a ‘crooked exterior’ “. Because of its placement, harsh winds sweep over the hillside, but the architects constructed a thick northern wall that protects the interior spaces from the weather. Some elements and rooms like the stairs, baths, kitchen and storage were placed on the northern part of the house to protect the living and sleeping spaces. A large south-facing ribbon window draws in the natural sunlight and offers beautiful views of the surroundings and the Ocean. Can you imagine a vacation in this magnificent house?
